The only modifications to the transmitter are as follows, the control sticks are disconnected and these functions moved to the top of the handle to a small box fitted with switches for each function, see photo the transmitter just hangs over my shoulder in flight.

Modifying the transmitter

This is the transmitter I have just modified, I have replaced the joy sticks with switches instead on having them on the handle just to see what it is like to use.    You do not have to buy a expensive transmitter and receiver the ones I use are FLY SKY see above, this six channel system costs about £22 including postage from the UK delivery three days, if they get much cheaper they will be giving them away. 12/2/16

One small modification I forgot to mention is to fit two screws into the rear lugs either side of the battery cover see photo.     The FLY SKY cover has a nasty habit of coming off when you keep picking it up and down in the flying circle, this has happened to me with the batteries in the grass.
